A future physician paying it forward

When I was just 7 years old, I started going to the Centre de réadaptation en déficience physique Raymond-Dewar with my parents when my severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hypoacusis was detected.

The specialists there took charge right away. They recommended that I either learn sign language or get a cochlear implant. My parents decided on hearing aids…and lots and lots of speech therapy! I also worked on my articulation for a long time with a speech therapist.

Now, I’m very comfortable with well-calibrated devices and I have good articulation. Both of these victories have had a huge impact. Without the help I’ve received, I’d never be living the life I have today, completing a PhD in medicine and playing for the Quebec handball team.

A welcome boost

Recently, I became part of the third cohort of the Fondation RÉAannual scholarship-holders. Alongside 14 other recipients, I received $3,000 to pursue my studies.

This helping hand has been vital, as I’ve just started my internship, the most demanding and comprehensive part of my studies. I work at the hospital from 7 or 8 a.m. to 7 or 8 p.m. every day of the week. Not to mention being on call until 10 p.m. on weekends and evenings.

With that kind of schedule, in addition to my handball practices and games, there’s no way I could work as well. Thanks to the scholarship, I can focus on my studies without worrying about money. This will enable me to become the best possible physician while continuing my physical and extracurricular activities.

Thank you to the entire Raymond-Dewar team for having supported me, through thick and thin. Thank you for your time, your attention, your kindness and your remarkable work. You’re one of the reasons I now want to help others in the health system.
